Name: Anwar Al Buraihi Title: War, Ideology and News Reporting: A Case Study of the U.S. Antipathy toward Al Jazeera Channel Institution: Tsinghua University Country: China Date: 2011 Language: English Abstract: This research examines the United States’ antipathy towards Al Jazeera Satellite Channel during the wars in Afghanistan (2001) and Iraq (2003). It shows how Al Jazeera covered the two wars and how the reaction of the Bush administration was. The study describes some of Al Jazeera’s coverage and compares it to that of U.S. Media, using content analysis methodology. Before the U.S. administration expressed its antipathy against the ‘The CNN of the Arab world’, as some would call it, many Arab regimes accused Al Jazeera of being an agent of the CIA and financed by the Israeli Mossad, among other accusations. U.S. officials have frequently accused Al Jazeera of being a mouthpiece for Osama bin Laden, a mouthpiece for Iraqi Propaganda and so forth. They called ‘the enemy’, ‘jihad TV’, ‘killers with cameras’,’ and ‘the most powerful ally of terror in the world’. This study explores many of the arguments made about the Al Jazeera channel, and looks at whether Al Jazeera offered balanced reporting and gave a fair chance to all sides in its coverage of the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq.
