Name: Ghalia Bdiwe Title: The Coverage of AJE and AJA of Recent Events in the Middle East: Al Jazeera’s Role in the Egyptian Revolution Institution: SOAS, University of London Country: United Kingdom Date: 2011 Language: English Abstract: This research examines and compares the news coverage of Al Jazeera Arabic and Al Jazeera English for the Egyptian revolution. The study assumes that both channels follow the same editorial policy in news coverage, and differ only in the language, since they both belong to the same network. However, viewers of both channels notice that the difference is not only confined to the language, but also concerns many other aspects. Therefore, this study investigates the extent to which AJA and AJE differ and why. A content analysis is conducted in order to compare similar news programmes aired on both channels, including the main news hour of the day. The comparison focuses on various aspects of the coverage, including footages, photos, guests, terms and codes of representation, hours of live coverage, order of stories and reports in news bulletins, number of field correspondents. Al Jazeera has generally two audiences, one for AJE and one for AJA; rarely do we find people watching both channels regularly. The language barrier prohibits viewers from noticing the differences; therefore, the assumption is generally that both channels are identical.
