It explores the extent to which Al Jazeera English, an Arab news channel, based in the Middle East, that has only been around for five years, targeting the English-speaking world, can compete with a global news network like CNN. The study also argues that the role of Al Jazeera needs to be investigated in light of CNN’s experience in particular, since it is the channel that many consider as a critical factor in determining foreign policies towards important events. The study analyzes the content of a sample of news items and programmes dealing with the revolutions and uprisings that have swept the Arab world since the beginning of 2011. Drawing on news framing theory, the study was conducted over a period of six months to analyze and compare the extent of impartiality or bias in the news coverage of both channels, which differ in orientation, funding and editorial policy. The study also explores the positioning and ranking of Arab issues on the agenda of these channels.
