Name: Mohamed Erraji Title: News Coverage of Maghreb Affairs in Al Jazeera Channel: Analytical Study of “the Maghreb Harvest” during 2010–2011 Institution: Omdurman Islamic University Country: Sudan Date: 2011 Language: Arabic Abstract: This study examines the indicators of news coverage on Al Jazeera’s “Maghreb Harvest”, which became one of channel’s main news programmes covering the Maghreb countries. The study looks at this particular news programme to determine the focus areas, the news genres and formats, the content and the message conveyed, and the professional standards and values of the media coverage. The research sample consists of data collected from “the Maghreb Harvest” news programme over a period of time, to examine the reporting of Maghreb affairs and the way regional news are prioritized according to the channel’s agenda. It also investigates the possible reasons why this special news programme, broadcast from Al Jazeera’s regional office in Rabat, was stopped. The research concludes that the input and output of news are affected by the channel’s liberal policies, its media attitudes, and the professional standards it adopts in news making. These standards differ according to the differences between theoretical frameworks of communication processes and according to the sociopolitical conditions and ideological orientations. The difference between sociopolitical systems imposes specific ways to report news and determine the perspective.
