The study takes into account the geopolitical context of the Gulf region and sheds light on the multi-faceted competition between its countries at different levels, economic, political and diplomatic. The media scene reflects this competition when covering local, regional and global affairs. This study looks at the coverage of the Qatari satellite channel Al Jazeera and the Saudi satellite channel al Arabiya to understand how they both reported the war in Lebanon in 2006. The news coverage of the two channels is put into context of rivalry between Qatar and Saudi ruling families. The thesis focuses on wide range of issues including the role of media in foreign policy of Qatar and Saudi Arabia, the use of media as a means of securing stability of the ruling regimes and maximizing their regional interest and influence. The thesis draws on the media- politics relationship theoretical to understand the ways in which Qatar and Saudi Arabia project their interests into their media outlets.
