Name: Bernadette Linder Title: Media Coverage of Terrorist Attacks in the News of AJE, CNN and BBC Institution: University of Innsbruck Country: Austria Date: 2011 Language: German Abstract: Based on current political events, this comparative study seeks to illuminates the terror reporting of the Western news channels CNN International and BBC World with the Qatar-based TV station Al Jazeera English. Al Jazeera English channel is considered the first English- speaking language broadcaster to broadcast via satellite from the Middle East and sees itself as a professional, independent and objective medium that gives a ‘voice to the voiceless’. At the same time, this news channel wants to convey a ‘different’ approach to news reporting and ‘different’ point of view on events compared to the dominating Western networks. Over a period of six month of investigation, the researcher compared and analyzed a selected sample of relevant news reports aired by the three broadcaster. Methodologically, the study employed a mixed approach combining both qualitative and quantitative methodologies. With regard to the content analysis, the researcher used a specially designed codebook to examine the visual elements contained in the collected data. The visual factors and contribution characteristics are specifically discussed in great detail. Country-specific features of the coverage are also taken into account in this analysis.
