114. Name: Maeve Duggan Title: Al Jazeera in American Media Institution: George Washington University Country: United States Date: 2012 Language: English Abstract:
This study examines the portrayal of Al Jazeera media network in American media over the course of a decade, since 9/11. By conducting an in-depth content analysis of a number of American media outlets, namely the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Washington Post, CNN Newsroom, NBC Nightly News, and Fox Special Report, the study identifies the factors and indicators that shaped the framing of Al Jazeera in American media. The researcher hypothesizes that Al Jazeera network was predominantly featured in stories involving war, terrorism, and conflict, and that the positive or negative portrayal of its coverage correlates to their perceived agreement or disagreement with American policy positions. In this context, the study looks specifically at events such as the war in Afghanistan, the war in Iraq, the war on terrorism, Al Qaeda and bin Laden, the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, and the Arab Spring uprisings. After considering these events and looking at the related American positions, the study concludes that the framing of Al Jazeera media network in American media was largely negative and event-driven. It unlikely that this portrayal will change over time.
