The study refers to Al Jazeera’s experience, focusing on its department of public liberties and human rights and the role it plays in this regard. Although most Arab countries are signatories of international conventions on human rights, there are still ongoing violations at different levels. Under these conditions, human rights activists and organizations joined their efforts to voice their concerns and defend peoples’ rights and freedoms. Al Jazeera became a key partner with these organizations, especially after establishing a dedicated united called “Department of Public Liberties and Human Rights”. This department works with a wide network of human rights organizations, both in the region and globally. The Department’s mandate is multidimensional and covers a variety of objectives and activities. It works towards raising awareness of human rights issues within Al Jazeera and among its staff, and provides the newsroom with related data, reports and specialized connections. It also coordinates with experts and organizations worldwide to develop policies and hold activities in different countries and regions.
