Name: Mirjam Tahkokorpi Title: The Goal is Freedom: The Coverage of the Egyptian Uprising by Helsingin Sanomat, New York Times and Al Jazeera Institution: Tampere University Country: Finland Date: 2012 Language: Finnish Abstract: The 2011 Egyptian uprising was widely covered in the media around the world. The protests lasted for almost three weeks, after which President Hosni Mubarak resigned from office. This study compares the online reporting of Western and Arab media of the Egyptian uprising. This comparative research focuses on the Finnish newspaper Helsingin Sanomat, the American newspaper New York Times and the Qatari television Al Jazeera channel. It investigates the features of peace journalism and war journalism contained in the online reports of these media outlets. The Egyptian uprising was not a traditional war, but a conflict where ordinary people wanted freedom and better living conditions. The study draws on Galtung’s approach to peace journalism and war journalism. The findings revealed that each media contained features of war and peace journalism. The New York Times reports showed the most characteristics of war journalism, while Al Jazeera’s reports resembled peace journalism the most. Peace journalism is still a relatively unknown type of journalism that is difficult to implement in traditional news media. The Internet and social media networks give peace journalism new opportunities to develop.
