Channel and the Arab Spring Institution: Birzeit University Country: Palestine Date: 2013 Language: Arabic Abstract:
This study examines the mutual effect between Al Jazeera channel’s media coverage and the Arab Spring revolutions. Al Jazeera channel played a pivotal role in the success of the Arab spring through its absolute support of these popular revolutions and its contribution to raising the voice of the people against the dictatorial regimes in the Arab world. The media coverage of Al Jazeera satellite channel and its affiliates also gave legitimacy to the opposition groups, especially in light of the rise of Islamic movements, by giving them a platform and an unprecedented space on its screen. The numerous post-revolution elections that took place in almost all of the Arab spring counties proved these new realities. The Arab spring revolutions and subsequent events were also reported and analyzed on Al Jazeera in both form and content. The study draws on the agenda setting and cultivation theories. Methodologically, the study employed the analytical quantitative analysis, using the tool of electronic questionnaire, which was distributed among a sample of intellectual elites in 17 Arab countries, including all the countries that were affected by the Arab spring.
