The study seeks to identify the key factors responsible for this growth in both operation and influence. Al Jazeera was founded in 1996 in the state of Qatar, during a time of great political changes in the region. The creation of Al Jazeera was part of a modernization process undertaken by the new Qatari leadership that came to power one year prior to launching Al Jazeera. This political change toppled a conservative government and introduced liberal reforms, resulting in marked changes at various levels. In 2001, amidst the war in Afghanistan, a hostile attitude towards Al Jazeera stated to grow after the channel managed to convey a narrative of the war different from that of the U.S., especially after broadcasting Osama Bin Laden’s videos. In 2006, the network launched a channel in English to present world news from an Arab perspective. The study analyzes data collected through ground observation and interviews with Al Jazeera staff.
