Name: Giulia Maccagli Title: The Geneva Peace Conference 2: The Events, the Actors and the Coverage by Al Jazeera, Al Arabiya and Aleppo Media Center Institution: Università Ca’ Foscari Venezia Country: Italy Date: 2014 Language: Italian Abstract: After outlining the dynamics of the Geneva 2 Peace Conference and the role played by different actors, this study focuses on the translation, linguistic and semantic analysis of articles dealing with the event, extrapolated from Al Jazeera, Al Arabiya and Aleppo Media Center (AMC). The aims is to give an overview of the Syrian conflict and the Geneva 2 peace conference, including protagonists, their aspirations, goals and interests. To this end, the study analyzes the style of these three broadcasters to identify the differences and similarities between them. The analysis focuses on a series of articles translated from Arabic into Italian by of the three outlets, using Fairclough’s approach to speech production. Fairclough provides a clear vision of how textual analysis is closely connected to sociocultural and political analysis. The choice of Al Jazeera, Al Arabiya and Aleppo Media Center is justified by the fact that the three news providers represent different voices in the panorama of Arab journalism and politics. Belonging to the same culture and speaking the same language does not necessarily lead to embracing the same thought, ideology, or views.
