This analysis focuses on the coverage of Al Jazeera and Al Arabiya channels for the uprisings in Bahrain and Syria as a case study. The study employed a descriptive analytical methodology and used content analysis to examine the channels’ coverage for these two cases. To collect the required data, the researcher conducted a number of real-time interviews with journalists and other media professionals in Bahrain and Syria. Such encounters with local journalists in both countries, were done for the first time by a third-world scholar. While studying the cases of Bahrain and Syria to understand the role of the media in the dynamics of protest movements, the research draws on a wealth of theoretical perspectives, including international relations, social constructivism, and new protest movements. The study also discussed a broad range of related issues such as sectarianism, identity politics, ethnicity and ethnic politics, race as well as gender discourse.
