The study focuses on and compares Al Jazeera English and CNN’s online coverage of the ISIS threat as a case study. To analyze this issue, the study conducted a quantitative content analysis for the period extending from June 2014 to December 2014. The research concluded with a number of findings that showed significant differences between the CNN and Al Jazeera English online news reports on the ISIS threat. These differences concern particularly the use of news sources and the news framing adopted by the two outlets. Most of CNN’s reports cited government officials as news sources, while Al Jazeera English relied more on news agencies and other media outlets as sources for its coverage of the ISIS threat. In terms of news frames, CNN mainly adopted the ‘geopolitics’ as primary frame to present news on this issue. In comparison, the dominant frame used in Al Jazeera English’s coverage was the ‘existential threat’ frame.
