The study examines news reports covering events that unfolded in Egypt from 1 to 3 July 2013, during which the country witnessed a change of political leadership. The main objective of this research is to examine the evaluative and ideological positioning between Al Jazeera Arabic and Al Jazeera English’s reporting of this event. The research also checks to what extent the appraisal model can be applied to Arabic online hard news reports. Based on the analyzed data, the findings show that there are differences in authorial stance and evaluative positing concerning the level of alignment to a particular political group versus another. It also show that the notion of translation in Al Jazeera depends mainly on how translation is defined. It seems to be involving a variable degree of translation/trans-editing between the two versions. Finally, the study shows that appraisal framework can be fruitfully applied to Arabic hard news reports.
