It examines the propaganda strategies used by three international media outlets to construct the representation of both sides to the conflict. Using descriptive methodology and qualitative analysis, the research analyzes data obtained from the news coverage of CNN, Al Jazeera, and BBC between 8 June and 5 August 2014. The research explores the media representation of Hamas and Israel using Fairclough’s approach to textual analysis dimension and social practice analysis dimension. The textual analysis dimension is analyzed using Halliday’s transitivity and van Leeuwen’s social actor representation, while the social practice analysis dimension is analyzed using Shabo’s techniques of propaganda. The findings show that, while CNN represents Hamas relatively negative and Israel relatively positive, Al Jazeera represents Hamas relatively positive and Israel relatively negative. BBC represents Hamas and Israel relatively even by representing them relatively negative. The research findings also show that various techniques of propaganda are used by the three networks to construct the representation of Hamas and Israel based on their particular ideologies.
