Name: Michaela Vaňková, Title: The Al Jazeera TV Phenomenon: Journalism from Past to Present Institution: University of West Bohemia Country: Czech Republic Date: 2016 Language: Czech Abstract: This research investigates the position of Al Jazeera as a regional and international media outlet and assesses its role in advancing media practices both in the Arab region and at the global stage. The study also looks at the network’s coverage of a number of events in the Middle East and, in return, assesses the impact of these events on Al Jazeera network itself. The study used quantitative methodology and content analysis to analyze a selected sample of news items and reports from Jazeera English, with special focus on the attack on Charlie Hebdo in Paris and other attacks in Tunisia. The thesis concluded with a number of results and found that the frequency of posted articles was declining during the coverage of these events and articles have different tonality and number of assigned values from the original hypotheses. To give a more comprehensive picture, the study follows the historic development of the network and highlights the most important milestones in its history. Al Jazeera is simply a concept and a phenomenon that is not easy to grasp and its effects are far-reaching.
