Mass media in the West manufacture consent towards sociopolitical values that support democracy and participatory politics. In less developed and less democratic countries in the East, the power of the media is used to consolidate the power of leaders and reinforce their grip on public authorities. Mass media in Eastern authoritarian countries are generally used as tools for propaganda, populism and promotion of the one and only voice of the regimes in place. In this Eastern context, Al Jazeera emerged as an alternative media, giving hope to the people of the region that a new era of the relation between media and politics has come. The channel managed to position itself as a global media player and an independent platform where civilizations of the East interact freely with those of the West beyond local and regional borders. This study examines Al Jazeera’s experience to see if it can operate as a supranational global media that represents the people of the world.
