The study uses critical discourse analysis, particularly the Norman Fairclough model, which suggests that discourse is a social practice. The research analyzes texts, discourse practices, and social practices. The findings of the study indicate that both Jazeera and Al Arabiya online services present the ‘Khilafah’ as a movement and organization rather than a state. However, Al Jazeera’s media coverage puts the story in a wider context and uses vocabularies related to the history of Islamic politics and state building since the 7th century. On the contrary, the media coverage of Al Arabiya channel ignores history completely and presents the ISIS phenomenon separately from any historical context. Ideologically, both Arab media services use Pan-Arab framework with varying degrees. While Aljazeera shows more Arabian sentiment and treats the ‘Khilafah’ organization as part of Arab culture and politics, Al Arabiya seems pro-American and treats the story with more emphasis on its religious aspect.
