Name: Hamad Al Samrin Title: A Comparison of News Coverage on the Arabic and English Versions of the Al Jazeera Websites Institution: Drexel University Country: United States Date: 2018 Language: English Abstract: Since it was launched 1996, Al Jazeera satellite channel has been controversial. Although they belong to same organization and seemingly follow the same editorial policy, Al Jazeera English-language website and Al Jazeera Arabic-language website report news in significantly different ways. After collecting data for seven weeks, this study uses analytical methodology to show that Al Jazeera Arabic and Al Jazeera English have different political and ideological orientations in their news reporting. The quantity of stories and reporting categories reflect the AJA and AJE editorial differences. The study found that AJA is more concerned with wars and conflicts in the Arab World, which caused a significant increase in the number of reports covering this type of events. Some areas, such as China, are rarely featured its coverage because China is not involved in the Arab World, whereas others such as Russia are involved, especially because of its 2015 intervention in Syria. The number of exclusive reports on AJA and AJE websites has a significant statistical difference. AJE is less concerned with the Arab World, which affects the number of reported news on the region.
