Name: Timothy Kurwa Title: ‘Global Media’ Coverage of the ZDF Intervention in Governance in Zimbabwe: The Case of Al Jazeera and BBC Institution: Midlands State University Country: Zimbabwe Date: 2018 Language: English Abstract: This study sought to identify and establish the news frames employed by Al Jazeera and the BBC channels in their media coverage of the Zimbabwe Defense Forces (ZDF) intervention in governance in Zimbabwe. The research unpacks all the meanings incorporated in the coverage of these two networks for this intervention that resulted in the toppling of President Robert Mugabe. Framing theory informed the study, which employed archival research, textual analysis, combined with critical discourse analysis (CDA) and prescriptive thematic analysis for data presentation. The study concluded with a number of findings including that global media coverage of the ZDF intervention in Zimbabwe perpetuated the use of negative frames on Africa such as political instability and conflicts, wars and military coups. Discourses of human rights, democracy and good governance were used to vindicate the intervention. Both channels, Al Jazeera and the BBC portrayed the coup as a necessary intervention aimed at removing a longstanding dictator from power. The study also concluded that the global media warmed up to the ZDF intervention in governance in Zimbabwe that was anti-Mugabe, thus the military intervention was unavoidable.
