Name: Natalia Andrea Márquez-Bustos Title: Critical Discourse Analysis: ‘Daesh’ in the New York Times, the BBC and Al Jazeera Institution: Pontificia Universidad Javeriana Country: Colombia Date: 2018 Language: Spanish Abstract: This study examines media coverage by the BBC, Aljazeera and the New York Times of six high-impact events in the history of Daesh (the Islamic State of Iraq and Levant). These events are Fall of Mosul, the declaration of the Caliphate, the execution of James Foley, the attacks in Paris, the attacks in Beirut, and the drop of the Mother of All Bombs. To this end, the study employs Edward Said’s orientalism analytical framework and Norman Fairclough’s approach to critical analysis of discourse (CDA). The study concludes with a number of findings including that media coverage is consistent with the network’s political alignments and editorial policies. This reality places the media coverage of Al Jazeera channel and the New York Times at opposite ends, and the BBC in between. This also sets a specific order of discourse with shared premises and counterhegemonic elements. The latter, originating from Al Jazeera in particular, manifest itself in the editorial separation of Daesh from the rest of Islam as a religion. Hence, for the Qatari news channel there is no orientalist confrontation between Islam and the West.
