Strategy on Social Networks Institution: Sorbonne Université Country: France Date: 2018 Language: French Abstract:
With more than 100 million subscribers on its various social network platforms, Al Jazeera’s digital strategy looks successful. This study tries to explain the reasons behind such a success. The digital strategy that makes Al Jazeera so successful consists in capitalizing on both a “mainstream” of editorial line and a number of other specialized “niches” like the audience of AJ+. This dual strategy makes it possible to maintain a leading position in the global information market, while pursuing other paths to reach out to more Internet users. Despite the renewal of its journalistic vision and its great capacity to introduce technological innovation, Al Jazeera’s digital expansion remains hampered by geostrategic games and smear campaigns by certain countries in the region. Some people still consider Al Jazeera as an ideological weapon used by Qatar. It is also accused of holding double standards regarding the defense of democratic and human rights values. The success of Al Jazeera’s development strategy depends on maintaining a complex balance between independence and commitment to professional journalistic values, while resisting attempts to integrate it into the diplomatic mechanisms of Doha.
