Al-Abbad Title: The Effect of Social Media Networks in Developing Journalists’ Political Awareness: the Case of Al Jazeera Media Network’s Journalists Institution: Arab Open Academy Country: Denmark Date: 2018 Language: English Abstract: This study aims to identify the impact of social media networks on the development of political awareness among journalists of Al Jazeera Media Network. The study also looks at the role these networks play in Enlightening and raising awareness, and the extent to which journalists rely on social media sources in selecting their news materials. The research concluded with a number of findings showing that social media networks are increasingly contributing to the development of the political awareness of journalists and media professionals. About three-quarters of the surveyed journalists consider that social media networks play an important role in developing their political knowledge and enhancing their understanding of political issues. 71% of them indicated that social media contributed to raising their awareness and 54% confirmed that the content of the news materials they produce is influenced by discussions between them and their colleagues and followers on social media networks. The influence of social media sources on news content is also confirmed by three quarters of news producers and interview producers, who are responsible for preparing and editing reports, news, articles and guest selection.
