As one of the most sought-after Arab source of information, Al Jazeera represents a key factor in influencing the public opinion in the Arab world and the Middle East at large. Due to the pressure on Al Jazeera by a number of regional players in the Middle East, especially during the Gulf crisis, also known as the blockade of Qatar, the influence of Al Jazeera and its image as an effective means of ‘soft power’ for the state of Qatar was questioned. At the beginning of the crisis, the reaction of the United States and of President Trump in particular, was ambiguous, which affected the US-Qatar relations. This negative development in the political relations seems to have also affected Al Jazeera’s image in a negative way. This study examines the characteristics of the channel’s image in the U.S. online media during the Gulf crisis. The research findings demonstrated the prevalence of negative characteristics of this image in the U.S. online media, partly because of the perceived relationship between Al Jazeera and Qatar, in which the channel is used as tool of soft power.
