Name: Omnia Elzahar Title: Framing the Forgotten War of Yemen: A Comparative Study (between Al Arabiya, Al Jazeera, RT Arabic and BBC Arabic) Institution: The American University in Cairo Country: Egypt Date: 2019 Language: English Abstract: The 2011 Yemeni revolution, much like the Tunisian and Egyptian revolutions, was distinguished by peaceful nonviolent protests and the creation of its own ‘tent cities’ and ‘people protector’ volunteers, who surrounded the revolution’s public spaces. However, in 2015, after the Houthi rebels took over the capital Sana’a and started expanding their power southward, Saudi Arabia led a military alliance with a declared goal to abolish the rebels’ movement and reinstate the legitimate government. This study examines the news frames used by four news channels in their coverage of the Saudi-led intervention. The researcher conducted a frame analysis of five frames: the conflict frame, the human- interest frame, the attribution of responsibility frame, the morality frame, and the economic consequences frame. The study compares four news channels with different affiliations: Saudi Arabia’s Al Arabiya, Qatar’s Al Jazeera, Russian-funded RT Arabic and the British BBC Arabic. Content analysis was chosen as the main methodology for this study. The selection of news pieces is performed mainly through online platforms, with YouTube as the prime source to retrieve the news items posted during the timeframe of the study.
