Among the professional fields in which translation is influenced by external factors is journalism. The present study tackles the reasons behind the changes that take place during the process of translation of news stories. The study reveals the role of ideology and power relations, along with other factors, in contributing to linguistic changes during translation from one language to another. This study uses qualitative interpretative methodology and benefits from Fairclough‘s three-dimensional model on critical discourse analysis. The model chosen in this research provides us with a detailed analysis of the English source texts written by Reuter’s news agency and the Arabic target texts translated by Al Jazeera satellite channel. The study concluded with a number of findings some of which revealed that, source and target texts are generally influenced by different ideologies and power relations of different patrons. The findings also showed that, during the process of translation, texts are subject to different techniques of language manipulation.
