Name: Ahad Ghannam Title: Ethics of Television Programs in Covering the Syrian Crisis: A Comparative Study of Al Arabiya’s Al-Hadath and Al Jazeera Institution: Middle East University Country: Jordan Date: 2020 Language: Arabic Abstract: This study examines the ethics of Al Arabiya’s Al-Hadath and Al Jazeera channel news coverage of the Syrian crisis for the period between 1 January 2014 and 31 December of the same year. The study aims at exploring the extent to which both channels were morally committed to their codes of ethics during their coverage of the Syrian crisis. To compare the coverage of the two channels from an ethics perspective, the researcher selected Al-Hadath’s “Today’s Harvest” and Al Jazeera’s “Harvest” programmes as research cases. He used the descriptive methodology and employed the survey and the content analysis tools. The study concluded with a number of findings including the lack of commitment to the journalistic ethics by both channels in displaying pictures and videos during their coverage of the Syrian crisis. The study also found that the mention of sources lacks in both programmes with close proportions. The findings also showed that the two channels were biased towards the opposition groups and gave them more airtime than the rest of the parties in the Syrian conflict, especially the Syrian regime and its representatives.
