Name: Mehad Abdulkarim Title: TV Programmes and their Effect in Raising Awareness of Human Rights Issues and Fundamental Freedoms: Analytical and Descriptive Study of Al Jazeera’s “Opposite Direction” Talk Show between 2018 and 2019 Institution: International University of Africa Country: Sudan Date: 2020 Language: Arabic Abstract: This research deals with a topic that has not been addressed in much of the previous literature, which is the role of the media in raising awareness of human rights and freedoms. It seeks to understand the objectives of Al Jazeera and its editorial policy with regard to this topic. The focus of this descriptive and analytical study is “the opposite direction” talk show that the channel broadcast on a weekly basis. The research community of this study includes a sample of experts, media professionals, as well as specialists in law, politics, and members of human rights organizations. The key findings show that Al Jazeera satellite channel was a forerunner among Arab TV channels in its handling of human rights issues. This was clear through the various episodes in which the programme addressed and defended human rights issues. The research concluded with a number of recommendations such as the following: The guests of this particular programme should show more respect for each other, and there should be greater opportunities for freedom of expression and respect for different opinions in other Arab media outlets.
