This study examines the transnational television coverage of the FIFA 2010 World Cup with three broadcasters, BBC World News, CNN International and Al Jazeera English as a case study. The study aims to reveal how these global networks depicted and framed South Africa as the host country. It also seeks to identify which topics were considered to be newsworthy and whether similarities or differences can be found in their coverage. A combination of quantitative content analysis and interpretative qualitative discourse analysis has been conducted. The research findings suggest that the three broadcasters tried to represent South Africa from different perspectives, reporting about a broad variety of topics going beyond the actual football event, clearly differentiating between the continent and the host country. Nevertheless, the broadcasters’ way of presenting certain topics differs slightly. Hence, the study provides insights into how the broadcasters represented the host country as well as a comparison of their reporting.
