Description: Samuel Huntington paints a pessimistic worldview in which future conflicts will take place between the major cultural regions of the world. The West and Islam in particular will continue to fight and mutually reinforce each other through religion, language and history. The media are an essential element in waging these conflicts, but possibly also in understanding between cultures. Mass media are potential mediators in modern times. Al Jazeera English (AJE) is one of the mainstream media players who made a name for itself by reporting on the Arab Spring in early 2011. It has the potential to act as a counterbalance to Western-dominated international reporting. This book investigates the extent to which Al Jazeera English can play a mediating role in the cultural conflict. 58. Author(s): Jürgen Gerhards (et al.) Title: Terrorism in Television: Formats, Content and Emotion

in Western and Arab Broadcasting Publisher: Vs. Publishing, Germany Year: 2011 Language: German

Description: Without the mass media, most people would not acquire any information and consequently know anything at all about terrorist attacks. However, as research has shown, mass media can portray the same terrorist act in a very different way. Such differences are best researched in comparative studies. This book compares terrorism media coverage in five influential global TV channels, which stem from different world regions: the US edition of CNN, the Arabic edition of Al Jazeera, the British BBC, as well as the German ARD and RTL channels. The book analyses the formats of coverage, the content and framing of the attacks, and the presentation of emotions. Identified similarities and differences are then interpreted with reference to globalization theories and theories that explore cultural differences.
