65. Author: Philip Seib (ed) Title: Al Jazeera English: Global News in a Changing World Publisher: Palgrave McMillan, US Year: 2012 Language: English

Description: In 2011, as Al Jazeera English covered the upheavals in the Arab world, its broadcasts themselves became the subject of news. How did a channel not even carried by the major cable television companies in the US come to be seen as the premier source for breaking news on the Middle East? This book provides discussion of Al Jazeera English and features analysis that assesses the channel’s origins, politics, global audience, and coverage of conflict and the Arab spring. AJE’s coverage, like that of any news organization, is far from perfect, the editor of this volume notes. It sometimes slips into cheerleading and self- congratulation and sometimes makes mistakes. Nevertheless, the world of news is richer for having AJE as part of it, he adds. 66. Author: Anne Sophie Pfisterer

Title: Arabic News Channel Al Jazeera in Conflict with the World Portrait of the Channel and Analysis of the Reporting of the Arab Spring in 2011 Publisher: AV Akademikervelag, Germany Year: 2012 Language: German

Description: Al Jazeera satellite channel featured in the international media again during the Arab Spring events at the beginning of 2011. Since its launch in 1996, this Arabic news channel has repeatedly confronted Arab governments and policies with sharp criticism. However, Western countries, especially the Unites States, were themselves very critical of Al Jazeera’s broadcasting, which they described as “non- objective and provocative reporting”. On the ground, these claims were translated into aggressive and hostile actions against the channel and its staff and facilities. Many of its bureaus were closed repeatedly and its journalists were harassed, arrested and even killed, but were these accusations justified? This book investigates Al Jazeera satellite channel’s reporting and analyses the journalists’ activities within the context of an international environment.
