Name: Reem Aboud Title: The Relationship between Modern Techniques Used in the Arab Satellite TV Channels and the Level of Knowledge of Arab Public of Current Events: Al Jazeera as a Case Study Institution: Cairo University Country: Egypt Date: 2008 Language: Arabic Abstract: The chapters of this study cover the research problem and its methodology, the theoretical framework, the impact of communication technology and live broadcasting of Arab satellite channels, the results of the analytical field studies, and the discussion of research findings. In May 2006, the researcher conducted an analytical study of 60 news bulletins from Al Jazeera and Al Arabiya. This sample comprises 754 news items covering the duration of 27.21 hours. She also carried out content analysis of 46 programme episodes on Al Jazeera and Al Arabiya including ‘In Depth’, ‘the Al Jazeera Platform’, ‘From Washington’, ‘Panorama’, ‘the Third Eye’, and ‘A Point of Order’. The field study used a deliberate sample of 400 expatriates (200 from Egypt and 200 from Syria). The findings showed that Al Jazeera and Al Arabiya exercise different forms of news coverage such as correspondents’ reports and illustrative material. Al Jazeera surpasses Al Arabiya in certain forms of news coverage, especially reports, fixed and electronic maps and dialogues. Political news takes precedence followed by security, military and legal news with the weather and health news coming in last.
