Duplex fire under investigation

GREGG CHAMBERLAIN gregg.chamberlain@eap.on.ca

Pedestrian killed in highway accident A man is dead as a result of a fatal accident Wednesday morning, Nov. 15, on Highway 417 near Vankleek Hill, involving a pedestrian and a tractor-trailer transport. OPP, paramedics, and the Champlain Fire Department were at the scene at about 11 a.m. The accident occurred on the eastbound lanes of Highway 417 in Champlain Township. Police closed access to the site with traffic detours set up at the Highway 34 route entry to allow both emergency personnel and the OPP Traffic Investigation Unit deal with the situation. The detours were lifted at about 6 p.m. that evening. Police confirmed one fata- lity resulting from the accident. The man was pronounced dead on the scene. Investigation of the accident continues. – Gregg Chamberlain The OPP is not asking the public for donations to help support its Community Bear Program. Several OPP detachments have received calls from residents asking about emails, letters and phone calls from people claiming to be fundraising for the Community Bear Program. The OPP already has sponsors for the program who provide black-and-white teddy bears for officers to give to children they meet who may be suffering shock and grief because of a traumatic situation, like a car accident or a fire. Police ask residents to report anyone who contacts them about donating money to the Community Bear Program. – Gregg Chamberlain The police and the Ontario FireMarshall’s Office are both investigating the cause behind a Nov. 14 evening residential fire in Hawkesbury. The Hawkesbury Fire Department answe- red a call after 8 p.m. about a house fire at 590McGill Street. The location was a duplex with the fire located in an upstairs bedroom of the duplex. Firefighters were able to contain the fire to that room. They left the scene after 2 a.m. after making sure the fire was extinguished and the building vented of smoke. The incident is now the focus of inves- tigation for both the OPP and the Ontario Fire Marshall’s Office. Both are trying to determine the exact cause of the fire and whether or not there are suspicious cir- cumstances involved. Police did make an arrest on the scene on what was cited as “reasonable probable grounds” but OPP spokesperson Const. Mario Gratton said, on Monday, that police investigators have not filed any charges yet as their investigation is still ongoing. OPP investigators are also waiting for results of the Fire Marshall’s Office investi- gation of the incident. Scam targets OPP community project
