f you’ve read any of my past newsletters, you’ve probably picked up on one thing: Sports are a big part of my family. The kids are year-round athletes. Every time the season ends in one sport, another season picks up. I ask them sometimes if they’re still having fun. I don’t want them to get burnt out or feel obligated to play because we’ve invested so much in it. The answer is always yes. That’s great, because we enjoy watching them, and it goes without saying that they learn critical life lessons when competing with their teams. That being said, our entire family enjoys July for the window between seasons that allows us to relax for a bit. Spring and early summer is baseball and lacrosse season for my son and softball season for my daughter. She plays for a competitive team that travels for tournaments. Her national softball tournament every July is the last big event in our family’s annual sports cycle. As soon as that’s over, we drive down to Wildwood Crest. It’s a summer tradition that we always look forward to. Everything starts right back up in August, so it’s our time unwind before hopping back on the high-speed train. We spend all day at the beach. If you’ve ever been down there, you know there’s plenty to keep a 9- and 11-year old occupied. They boogie board, swim, go on the rides, and they love going up and down the boardwalk. The water is actually quite warm this time of year, so it’s even

The best compliment we can receive is to have one of our patients refer a friend or family member to our practice. If you refer someone and we are able to take them as a patient, you and the person who was referred

more pleasant. My son loves making sand castles, digging moats, and building tunnels for his toy trucks to pass through. Our family moves at a pretty fast clip, which works wonderfully for us. We wouldn’t have it any other way. But watching everyone slow down and go at their own pace is like a breath of fresh air. While the kids run around, Mom and I enjoy sitting in our beach chairs and watching them. She likes to cozy up in the sun with a nice book. As for me, I appreciate moments when I can step away, shut my mind down, and relax. Those are pretty vital for re- energizing and refocusing so I can be the best husband, father, coach, and physical therapist I can be. We get ice cream every night — another highlight for the kids — and relax in our hotel rooms. At least once during the week, we head down to Cape May to get dinner and walk on the beach there. I hope you and your families get to enjoy time like this together in your own way. We all need to slow down occasionally and appreciate the world around us — and each other. I hope your summer is warm, beautiful, and as refreshing as it is for our family.

“Sitting is more dangerous than smoking, kills more people than HIV, and is more treacherous than parachuting. We are sitting ourselves to death.” Those are the words of Dr. James Levine, who made headlines back in 2014 when he released the results of

years of research into what’s really killing Americans. Just as cigarette use was killing Americans in droves back when the population still smoked, the prevalence of desk jobs is a huge health risk today. Humans, it turns out, are meant to be on their feet and on the go, just like our ancestors were. “We have created for ourselves a modern way of living that clashes with the way we’re meant to be,” Levine says. We’ve seen that sitting can also lead to other health issues, like carpal tunnel syndrome, pinched nerves, and strained eyes and muscles. And if you’re not in good shape (because you sit all day at work), you’re more likely to get injured doing other activities in your life. Levine says that ideally, you’d spend four hours a day on your feet. Of course, that may not be an option for many of you, especially if you work a desk job. We recommend getting up at least once an hour and walking around for a few minutes. Even a trip to the water cooler is better than nothing! But the real way to combat a sedentary job is to live an active life after hours. A lot of us want to plop down in front of the TV, but we’d be better off taking a long walk after work and spending some time cooking in the kitchen — on our feet, of course.

You can also go to a standing desk, or even a treadmill desk — which Levine invented.

e hope you’re spending plenty of time outside, enjoying the activity this warm weather makes possible. One thing is for sure: Your skin can’t hide from the

summer sun. You’ve heard everything there is to hear about protecting your skin with sunscreen, but how about ways to give it a youthful glow? Skin protection is the first place to start, but the secret to youthful skin also lives in the kitchen. Here are four recommended foods to improve the look and feel of your skin: 1. Lemons and limes. They help eliminate toxins in the body that can cause blotchy skin. They also contain hefty amounts of vitamin C, which helps the formation of a natural protein called collagen. This protein is so good for your skin it’s sold as a cosmetic product. 2. Black sesame seeds. They contain essential oils like protein, magnesium, and zinc, each of which are all-natural and great for your skin. They are also rich in antioxidants.

3. Oily fish. Inflamed and sensitive skin is not youthful skin. Fish like as salmon, trout, sardines, and tuna contain omega-3 acids, which reduce those conditions. 4. Red guava. We talk about skin protection, and the first thing we mention is sunscreen. This is still important, but red guava can help protect the skin from the sun due to its richness in lycopene. Oh,

and remember how we said lemons and limes are rich in vitamin C? Red guava contains four to five times more of it than those.

ONE-PAN Mexican Quinoa

This healthy, tasty, filling dish is a cinch to make on a busy weeknight. And cleanup’s a breeze!

Ingredients:

• 1 tablespoon olive oil • 2 cloves garlic, minced • 1 jalapeno, minced • 1 cup quinoa • 1 cup vegetable broth • 1 (15-ounce) can black beans, drained and rinsed • 1 (14.5-ounce) can fire-roasted diced tomatoes • 1 cup corn kernels, frozen, canned, or roasted • 1 teaspoon chili powder • ½ teaspoon cumin 1. Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add garlic and jalapeno and cook, stirring frequently, until fragrant, about 1 minute. 2. Stir in quinoa, vegetable broth, beans, tomatoes, corn, chili powder, and cumin; Directions:

• Salt and pepper to taste • 1 avocado, halved, seeded, peeled, and diced • Juice of 1 lime • 2 tablespoons chopped fresh cilantro leaves

season with salt and pepper to taste. Bring to a boil; cover, reduce heat and simmer until quinoa is cooked through, about 20 minutes. Stir in avocado, lime juice, and cilantro.

3. Serve immediately.
