RE:

Departmental ARPT Guidelines for Clinical Faculty with addenda

On December 6, 2017, Dr. Jeffrey Strawn presented the addenda described below to the faculty. AAUP and non-AAUP faculty within the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Neuroscience were given the opportunity to review the new ARPT guidelines. Based on the super majority vote from AAUP faculty/non-AAUP faculty (31 in favor; 3 abstain; 0 opposed), the Department would like to adopt the College of Medicine’s Criteria for Appointment, Reappointment, Promotion and Tenure for Clinical faculty with the following addenda: 1. For faculty in the Volunteer Track, two—rather than three—letters of recommendation are required for new appointments and reappointments. However, consistent with the 2012 Departmental ARPT Guidelines, one of these letters must be from the Vice Chair of Education (or designee) or a Vice Chair of Research (either Translational Research, Clinical Research or Basic Science). 2. For psychiatrists, board certification is required within 3 years of appointment to the rank of Assistant Professor, except in rare circumstances. Psychiatrists must maintain general and/or subspecialty certification by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology and must retain their specialty/subspecialty certification through recertification (if the certification is time-limited), except in rare circumstances. 3. For clinical psychologists, board-certification is strongly encouraged at all academic ranks.
