Recently I enjoyed the privilege of going to Boppard, around an hour or two from Köln, as a GCSE German student where we all had a fantastic time with a brilliant group of teachers. It was excellent to see some German culture as well as practise some speaking! The trip began with a gruelling 3am start…but the journey was very smooth and everyone was evidently very excited, as seen by the singing on the coach all the way. Once installed, we had our first evening meal in Boppard where I got to know new people and everybody was able to relax after the long day. Then we saw the picturesque river Rhein for the first time on an evening walk through the village. Year 10 Boppard Trip!
The following day we journeyed to Köln. The cathedral was as spectacular as I had heard, both inside and out, in fact many of us even opted to climb the cathedral. 513 steps up and 513 steps down, it was excruciating, but worth it for the stunning view! It was incredibly interesting to learn about Köln’s fascinating history on a walking tour around the city, although of course what we all looked forward to the most was Köln’s extensive shopping scene. Some of us were also treated to a performance by a marching band in the square, as is German tradition. After that, we all relaxed on a boat trip down the Rhein; Köln really is the most beautiful city. We ended the day out with a visit to the Lindt chocolate shop before dinner and a stroll by the river in the evening.
