eous judgment when a sin-avenging God demanded payment to the full from the hands of the Surety.— H en ry P a yn e . APRIL 5 Herein Is Love "Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation fo r our sins" (1 John 4: 10 ). See a mountain-side deserted. See a garden, midnight-still, See a lonely figure kneeling In the silence of the hill; Hear Him pray, in tones of anguish, Till His brow with blood is wet, “Not My will, but Thine, O Father!”— Olivet! I have loved thee, I have loved thee, With an everlasting love! See the heavens o’erspread with shadow, See a steep and stony hill, See a surging throng press upward On a morning cold and chill; ’Gainst the sky a cross uplifted, High upraised for all to see— Hanging there the Prince of Glory— Calvary! I have loved thee, I have loved thee. With an everlasting love!

"Now before the [east o f the passover, Jesus knowing that his hour was come that he should depart out o f this world un to the Father, having loved his own that were in the world, he loved them to the uttermost " (John 13:1, R.V., margin). The cross is the insistence of love. . . . It is the magnificent and majestic authority of love. He will love. He cannot help loving, because He is love. He will never cease to love a single one He has created. Sin as a force that ruins is ended in the cross. It is not ended anywhere else. If men will not come into relation with that cross, then sin is still an element of force, so great that no man is equal to its over coming.—G. C a m pbell M organ . APRIL 2 Alone "And they all forsook him, and fled" (Mk. 14:50). I think I know what it is to be the only Christian in a station, the only lightbearer in dark circumstances, and what it is to be alone. Of the people, there was none with Him; His own forsook Him and fled. There is about Jesus a poignant solitari ness, and He passed through that in order that He might understand what it is to be lonely, and to become the companion of the solitary, that none of us should walk alone. — J o h n M a c bea th . APRIL 3 Little Things "And so Pilate, willing to content the people, released Barabbas unto them, and delivered Jesus, when he had scourged him, to be crucified" (Mk. 15:15). You can never tell how much your “yes’' or "no” may mean. Pilate didn’t realize the tremendous significance of his consent to the crucifying of Jesus. To him perhaps it was simply one case more, unusually troublesome, to be gotten rid of. But there are no little things when right and wrong are at stake. The tendency today is to slip along the easiest way, as Pilate did. Jesus, Master, help us to be true to Thee in all things.—S. D. G ordon . APRIL 4 “He Was Bruised” "Y et it pleased the Lord to bruise him; he hath put him to grief" (Isa. 53:10). The work of redemption is the work of Jehovah’s pleasure, and that this might be accomplished Jehovah’s servant must be bruised. His soul must be made an offering for sin. Henceforth it is only right that He who at such a cost wrought redemption should be entrusted to carry the work and purpose of Jehovah to a successful issue. There were many sufferings of the Lord Jesus from the hand of man; but the bruis ing and the grief are undoubtedly in right

APRIL 6 The Center of History
"Now there stood by the cross o f Jesus his mother, and his mother’s sister . . . and Mary Magdalene" (John 19:25). The cross of our Lord Jesus Christ is the center of human history___ It is the key to all Scripture history and type, the fact which gives meaning to all other facts. To ignore the cross is to repeat the error of the old philosophers who thought that the earth, and not the sun, was the center of our solar system, and to whom, therefore, the very heavens were in confusion. To know and love the cross—to stand beside it as the faithful women did when Jesus died —is to obtain a deep insight into the har monies of all things in heaven and on earth. —F. B. M e y er .
