Grads power play punishes Colts NAVAN | The Cornwall Colts stumbled on the scoreboard against the Cumberland Grads thanks to a stampede of penalties. The Sunday weekend game saw the Grads fire in four goals during their power- play advantage against the Colts to win the game 6-2. Scoring for Cumberland against Corn- wall were Matthew Dupont, David Bennett, Mark Golberg, and Travis Douglas. Assisting on the goal-scoring were Tielen Celentano, Maxime St. Pierre, Bobby Williams, Dupont, Bennett, and Golberg. Grads goalie Reilly Turner blocked 44 of
the 46 shots from the Colts while Cornwall’s James Edwardson stopped 36 of the 42 Cumberland shots on goal. The Colts collected 14 minutes worth of penalty time during the match with seven minors compared to 10 minutes and five minors for the Grads.
Sunday’s win gives the Grads a 10-10- 3 win/loss/OT loss record after 23 games played so far this season in the Yzerman division of the Central Canadian Hockey League (CCHL). Leading the league with 41 points after 26 games played is Carleton Place in the Robinson division. Ottawa and Nepean are jockeying for the lead in the Yzerman and trailing behind Carleton Place with 31 points each. Next game for the Grads is Nov. 8, 6:30 p.m., at home in the Navan Memorial Arena against Pembroke. Cumberland also hosts Smiths Falls Sunday afternoon at 3 pm. The Cumberland Grads club continues to seek local families willing to serve as billet homes for members of the junior A team. Billet families receive financial support for their billets. 4-1 for L’Escale and the neighbouring rivals got another whack at the Wildcats but had to work a little more to manage a 2-1 win in the Prescott-Russell semi-finals. RDHS finished third in the PR playoffs but that still earns the Wildcats a berth at next year’s Eastern Ontario Secondary School Athletic Associations championships (EOS- SAA). Wildcats Brenna Beattie and Adam Cooke shared top scoring honours for the season with teammates Azif Nazerally nom- inated star defence and midfielders Andrew Clemente and Spencer Murray junior stars.
ROCKLAND | The Wildcats varsity boys have a chance at regional soccer glory next year. Rockland District High School (RDHS) led the season for senior boys soccer in the Prescott-Russell high school league. The Wildcats finished the regular season 7-1 win-loss record with their only defeat dur- ing the October season finals against their local rival the L’Escale Cougars. “Hard work, playing as a team, and a determination to succeed,” said Wildcats Coach Kafui Kumahor, regarding what the strengths were for the team this season. He noted that most of the game scores in the past season’s matches averaged 3-0 and 4-0 for RDHS. “They (opposition) were not very close.” The match against the Cougars finished
