8. A Peculiar Burden "Blessed be the Lord, who daily loadeth us with benefits, even the God of our salvation” (Psa. 68:19). R. C. Chapman, the pilgrim patriarch of Barnstaple, on being asked how he was one morning, replied, “I am bur dened this morning.” “Burdened, Mr. Chapma'h!” was the expression of surprise. “Yes, dear brother, He ‘daily loadeth us with benefits.’ ” —Henry Pickering. 9. The Kindly Screen “As thy days, so shall thy Strength be” (Deut. 33:25). Today is hard. Tomorrow will Be harder still. Yet God has kindly placed between A threefold screen Of sunset sky, sleep’s downy wings, And dawn that sings, That I may view with tranquil heart Each day apart. . —Belle Chapman Morrill. 10. Ever New “The holy Jerusalem, descending out of heaven from God, having the glory of God: and her light was like unto a stone most precious, even like a jas per stone, c l e a r as crystal” (Rev. 21:10,11). Many people suppose that we shall see heaven the first day we get there. You cannot see London in two weeks. You cannot see Rome in six weeks. You cannot see Venice in a month. You cannot see the great city of the New Jerusalem in a day. No; it will take all eternity to see heaven, to count the towers, to examine the tro phies, to gaze upon the thrones, to see the hierarchies. Ages on ages roll, and yet, heaven is new. The streets new! The temple new! The joy new! The song new!—T. DeWitt Talmage. 11. Where Christ Now Appears “For Christ is not. entered into the holy places made with hands, which are the figures of the true; but into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God for us” (Heb. 9:24). Do we not dwell too seldom upon the present work of our Lord for us in heaven? We think of His first advent and of His second advent—of what He has done for us in the past, and of what He will do for us in the future; not so often, and not so appreciatively, of what He is d o i n g for us> in the present. . . . He intercedes for us now, s e a t e d upon the heavenly throne. “Now” is significant of His continued intercession for us.—C. T. Cook. 12. The Fruit of Abiding “He that abideth in me . . . bringeth forth much fruit” (John 15:5). Union- with Christ, and abiding in Christ, what do they not secure? They

bring peace, perfect peace; rest, con stant rest; answers to all our prayers; victory over all our foes; pure, holy living; ever-increasing fruitfulness. All, all of these are the glad outcome of abiding in Christ. —J. Hudson Taylor. 13. Paul's Thorn in the Flesh “My grace is sufficient for thee” (2 Cor. 12:9). Paul’s thorn was not pleasant to him. He prayed to be rid of it. But when he found it had come to stay, he made friends with it swiftly. It was no longer how to dismiss, but how to entertain. He stopped groaning and began glorying. It was clear to him that it was God’s will, and that meant new opportunity, new victory, new likeness to Christ. Wh&t God means is always too good to be lost and is worth all it costs to learn. Let us learn as swiftly as we may. Time is short.—Maltbie D. Babcock. 14. Have Faith in God “Let us hold fast the profession of our faith without wavering; for he is faithful that promised” (Heb. 10:23). Have faith in God though war clouds darkly gather And b r e a k in fury over sea and land; For He who calmed the raging tem pest Can cause the strife to cease at His command. Have faith in God though perils may surround thee; He is not dead, nor doth He ever sleep, For He who notes the falling of a sparrow, His trusting children will in safety keep. , Have f a i t h in God, wait patiently upon Him; Rest in His love with confidence sublime, Assured that He who orders all crea tion Will make all right at the appointed time. —Amy L. Mack. 15. "Life . . . in the Blood" “The life of the flesh is in the blood: . . . it is the blood that maketh an atonement for the soul” (Lev. 17:11).
