The Museum of BBQ is here to teach the world about why barbecue matters in Kansas City and across the country. We’ve created a joyful, family-friendly environment to make learning fun and celebrate the spirit of barbecue, which is about bringing people together. We’re on the second floor of Crown Center, next to Chip’s Chocolate Factory. We opened in April 2025 as the world’s first museum about barbecue. Workshops take place at their location located off Johnson Drive in Overland Park, KS. KC Maker Studio and Fabrics is a full-service fabric shop offering a wide selection of fabric, patterns, notions, sewing machines, and classes for all ages. Workshop includes the badge/patch. Troop leaders only need to register if they plan on participating. Each troop is allowed two non-participating troop leaders, free of charge. Call (913) 314-0340 to book your experience.

Make paper beads with reuse materials! Learn how to turn leftover paper into a beaded necklace, bracelet or garland. This simple project will introduce a new craft skill, requires repeated practice of the new skill, and encourages tinkering through material exploration and individual designs. Magpie Creative Reuse Collective will supply all the materials for this activity. Attendee Cost$200 flat fee, includes materials, instructor and travel. Book Artist Badge Workshop

Museum of BBQ Tour & Scavenger Hunt

Make a variety of notebooks and sketchbooks with recycled materials. Learn simple book binding and personalize your creation. Magpie Creative Reuse Collective will supply all the materials for this activity. Attendee Cost$200 flat fee, includes materials, instructor and travel. Additional Information: Please register 4-6 weeks in advance of event date. Length: 1.5 Hrs

Girls will explore sewing by learning to use a needle and thread. They will use these skills to sew one daisy keychain by hand sewing pieces of felt together. Girl Scouts do not need any prior sewing experience to enjoy and excel in this class. All materials provided. This is a one-hour workshop at $15 per Girl Scout. Daisy and Brownie girls can earn their Art & Design badge.

Let’s Go Outdoors Sit Upon

Come see the world’s first museum dedicated to barbecue. With 10 interactive exhibits, you’ll have fun learning how barbecue gets its flavor and why it tastes different in different parts of country. Complete the scavenger hunt for fun prizes, get a few neat surprises along the way, and spend some time taking a dip in our oversized bean pit. Tickets are $6 for kids. Adults and chaperones are free.Length: 45-minutes.

Girl Scouts will explore sewing using upcycled materials. They will upcycle a reusable tote bag, personalize it and turn it into a sit-upon. A sit-upon is a water-repellent cushion that Girl Scouts can use when they go on camping trips. Completion of the Tag- along Tote Bag is required to advance to this class. All materials provided. This is a 2 hour workshop at $35 per Girl Scout.

Friendship Fold-Over Wristlet

Girls will continue to explore machine sewing through this next- level project. They will make a fold over wristlet using cotton quilting weight fabric and a cam snap. Completion of One For Me, One For You is required to advance this class. All materials provided. This is a 1 hour $25 per Girl Scout workshop. Brownies and Juniors can earn their Art & Design badge.

Crossbody Cell Phone Bag

Make something old new again with junk jewelry keychains. Learn how to upcycle pieces of broken jewelry and scrap fabric into a fun bag charm or key chain. For this project, Girl Scouts will learn about reuse and practice using basic jewelry-making tools. Cost: $200 flat fee, includes materials, instructors, and travel. Length: 1.5 Hrs. Please register 4-6 weeks in advance.

Girl Scouts will explore sewing with a machine and will learn to put a zipper into a bag that they can carry a cell phone or personal items in. Prior sewing experience is recommended. All materials provided. This is a three hour workshop at $40 per Girl Scout.

Tagalong Tote Bag

3331 Roanoke Rd Kansas City, MO 64111 but willing to travel anywhere in the KC Metro Area. Like all magpies, we are collectors. Our focus is collecting and reselling leftover and remnant material and providing education and resources to encourage reuse. One For Me, One For You

Girls will explore sewing with a sewing machine and will make a lined tote bag with quilting-weight cotton fabric and cotton webbing for the straps. Juniors will learn the basics of using a sewing machine, pinning and cutting fabric. All materials provided. Art & Design Badge included for Juniors, a patch for Cadettes and Seniors. This is a 2 hour, $35 per Girl Scout workshop.

Girls will explore machine sewing. They will learn about sewing machines, practice sewing, then will sew 2 headbands using cotton quilting weight fabric and elastic, one for themselves and one to give to a friend. Girl Scouts do not need any prior machine sewing experience to enjoy and excel in this class. All materials provided for this 1-hour workshop at $20 per Girl Scout. Brownie and Junior girls can earn their Art & Design badge.

Girl Scouts can take their artwork to the next level! Learn about the history of collage and make an assemblage shadow box with reused treasures and cut paper. Magpie will provide a wide variety of treasures to help Girl Scouts tell their story through collage. Most exciting of all, they will complete steps for their Collage Artist Badge. Length: 2 Hours. Cost: $250 flat fee, includes materials, instructor and travel
