Through educational programs and outdoor recreation, they engage the public in nature. Troops can use Camp Tongawood’s lake and facilities to host these programs or a lake near them. Ernie Miller Nature Center offers outdoor education and recreation for all ages of Girl Scouts. For details and pricing on scout programs, visit our Scouts and Youth Programs page. Ernie Miller Nature Center programs are scheduled by appointment at 913-826-2800 for weekdays and select Saturdays from 9 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. during the school year. Sorry, no summer availability. All ages of youth and adults count towards maximum headcounts for most programs, even leaders and chaperones. These are not a drop-off activities. Troop leaders or caregivers must ensure safety ratio is maintained per Girl Scout Safety Activity Checkpoints.

Wildlife Programs at Ernie Miller Nature Center

Guided Hikes at Ernie Miller Park

Create your own customized hands-on program. Programs topics include fish identification, casting safety, how to knot and bait a hook, rules and regulations, fish printing, and more. Your program can be customized to the activities your troop would like to do.

45-minute programs for all ages with LIVE animals. Learn about habitats, adaptations, and other fascinating facts from our staff while seeing our resident wildlife up close. Several program themes to choose from, including raptors, reptiles, insects, and a variety of other live animals! Perfect fit for Animal Habitats, Animal Observer, and Bugs Badges completion.

One-hour Nature Walk with our Naturalist tailored to include topics you are working on. Or one-hour Survival Hike emphasizes teamwork, decision making and staying safe outdoors. Perfect for Eco Learner, Eco Friend, Eco Trekker, Eco Explorer, Eco Advocate, Trail Adventurer, Outdoor Art Maker, Outdoor Adventurer, Hiker, Outdoor Art Creator, Eco Art Explorer, and Math in Nature Badges. All ages count, including adults Fall Hayride at Shawnee Mission Park Enjoy a 45-60 minute tractor-drawn hayride through Shawnee Mission Park, followed by cider and marshmallows at a campfire. Go Green! The Dirt on Composting at Ernie Miller Nature Center

Canoe/Kayak Float Trip

Map & Compass one-hour clinic will teach the parts of a compass and the basics of reading a map. Combine the two and you will never get lost again!

Relax, unwind, and float! Girls will have fun while creating mem- orable experiences floating down a picturesque section of the Big Niangua River that is mostly lazy, occasionally thrilling, and rarely challenging. Girl Scouts will enjoy facilities that are top-notch with a range of lodging choices. Cost: $30/person.
