WE CAN HANDLE OUR HANDI CAPS BY OVERCOMING THEM! 1. It often has been done to the praise of men. Examples: a. Francis Parkman, the great American historian, lived in constant pain. He was almost blind, suffered acute digestive disorders, rheumatism, and violent headaches, yet he wrote twenty magnificent historical volumes. b. John Milton said, “Who best can suffer, best can ,do,” and proved his own "statement by writing “Paradise Lost” after he was stricken blind. c. Glen Cunningham was horribly burned as a child. 2. Righteousness brings honor to a nation, hut sin brings dishonor (Prov. 14:34). 3. Prosperity must be humbly ac knowledged as resulting from God's fa vor (Deut. 8:6-20). 4. A godly heritage is not a suffi cient safeguard, for all who sin are held personally responsible* (Ezek. 18: 20 ). 5. Divine judgment comes to individ uals and nations that forget God (Psa. 9:17). JULY 27, 1941 HOW TO HANDLE HANDICAPS 2 C o r i n t h i a n s 1 2 :7 -1 0 ; P h il ip p ia t ís 4 :1 3 By Lyman A . Wendt Introduction Many young people have felt hin dered in their “success” in their spiritual lives because of some illness or mis fortune. All of us, undoubtedly, have known persons who have had physical, intellectual, or material handicaps. Through no fault of our own, some of us áre required to go through life under decided disadvantages. Sometimes these things are difficult to explain, especially when the persons involved are yielded and devoted to our living .Lord Jesus. As Christians, we should seek to dis cover the cause of our. handicaps, and, if possible, remove the cause. If this is beyond our control, there are two pos sible ways of handling our handicaps: (1) By making them actually an asset in the development of character; i. e., by using them! (2) By making them the means of developing other talents and abilities; i. e., by overcoming them! • For Those Who Have Topics I. WE CAN HANDLE OUR HANDI CAPS BY USING THEM! 1. To bring blessing to self and others. Examples: a. Thomas Edison was very deaf, and spent a lifetime developing and producing equipment to transmit and reproduce sound—both voice and music. to. Dr. Edward Trudeau was sent to the mountains to die of tuberculosis. Impressed by the great need of treat ment for those in such circumstance as his, he, instead of dying, spent his time treating patients less ill than himself, and raised money for the great hospital at Saranac. He passed from aij unknown doctor to a physician of world-wide fame. c. Florence Nightingale, bedridden, reorganized the hospitals of England. d. Pasteur, semiparalyzed, spent his life in a tireless war on disease. e. See Readers Digest for Novem ber, 1937, "Turn Your Sickness into an Asset."
