ANNUAL REPORT
Dear Friends of Madonna Mission, As I reflect on this past year at Madonna Mission, I continue to be moved by the many journeys that intersect within our community each day. Every student who walks through our doors carries a unique story, shaped by courage, resilience, sacrifice, hope, and determination. At the same time, every tutor, volunteer, donor, staff member, community partner, and supporter also brings their own journey to Madonna Mission. Together, those paths converge into one shared purpose: promoting and restoring human dignity through education.
Throughout 2025, we experienced continued growth, not only in enrollment and programming, but in the depth of connection within our community. Former students returned to Madonna Mission as counselors and mentors, while other alumni became engaged as members of our Associate Board, continuing their connection to the community that helped shape them. Our classrooms were filled with refugee women learning English, children discovering confidence through literacy, tutoring, and swim lessons, and volunteers generously sharing their time and talents. We were especially delighted to launch a new music program this year, culminating in the students’ first in-house concert during our holiday celebration in December. Throughout the year, new partnerships flourished, and countless individuals stepped forward to ensure that families arriving in Chicago felt welcomed, supported, and known. In a year when many refugee families faced uncertainty and unfamiliar challenges, Madonna Mission remained a place of learning, friendship, and stability. Week after week, our students continued to show remarkable courage and determination in pursuing brighter futures for themselves and their children. Their perseverance inspires us daily. What began years ago as a small mission has grown into an enduring home of learning and belonging. As we look ahead, we are increasingly aware of the importance of creating not only strong programs, but a lasting home where refugee families can continue to gather, learn, and belong for generations to come. From Refugee Camp to Refuge for Others F rom R ef u gee C a mp to R ef u ge f or O t he rs January’s Story
Seventeen years ago, a 10-year-old girl named January Htoo stepped off a plane in Chicago after traveling halfway around the world from a refugee camp in Myanmar. She remembers the cold first.“It was my first time seeing snow,” January says. “Everything felt completely new.” Until then, January’s world had been a refugee camp made up of bamboo homes with dirt floors and tin roofs. Families cooked over firewood and lit their homes with candles. Children played near streams winding through the camp, while parents carried the constant burden of uncertainty.
There were moments of joy, but also moments of fear. Sometimes fires swept through the camp without warning, reducing homes to ash in minutes. Safety was never guaranteed. Opportunity was scarce. Education was limited. Reflecting back on this time, January now says “We left the camp seeking safety, better opportunities, and a future with education and work.” When January, her mother, and her brother arrived in Chicago through the refugee resettlement process, they entered a world of unfamiliar routines and difficult firsts: airplanes, cars, winter coats, grocery stores, classrooms, a new language. “The first week, I was trying to adjust to school, new routines, and new surroundings,” she recalls. “The cold was overwhelming.” Like many newly resettled refugee families, the challenges facing January’s family were daunting. January’s mother, Juna Paw, the sole provider for the household, had to learn to navigate Chicago’s public transportation system and maintain steady employment, all while speaking little to no English. There were also financial pressures that many people do not realize refugees carry upon arrival in the United States. Refugee families are required to repay the cost of their flights to the U.S., and for years January’s family went without internet access at home while working to pay off that debt and cover basic necessities. But amid all the uncertainty, one relationship would change the course of January’s life. At the time, Lynn Gordon was volunteering with Catholic Charities’ Refugee Resettlement Program. When January’s family needed help navigating their new life, Lynn showed up. She helped January with homework and English tutoring. She helped her get a school uniform. But it was the smaller moments January remembers most vividly. Her first birthday cake. Her first Christmas present. Trips to the zoo, baseball games, and movies. Most importantly, January remembers the feeling those moments created. “It made us feel safe,” she says.
That sense of safety, belonging, and human connection would later become the foundation of Madonna Mission. Inspired by relationships with families like January’s, Lynn founded Madonna Mission to provide long-term educational and community support for refugee women and children navigating life in a new country. January became one of the organization’s earliest students, participating in both the After School Program and the Learning in Action summer program.
At Madonna Mission, she found more than academic support. She found a community. She found friendships. She found people who believed in her.
Today, January is in her twenties and works as the Administrative Assistant at Madonna Mission, the very organization that once helped her family begin again.
She earned a degree in graphic design from North Park University and has developed a gift for storytelling and creative work. But perhaps her greatest strength is the compassion she brings to families now walking the same difficult path her own family once traveled.
Every day, January helps refugee mothers, children, and newcomers feel welcomed, understood, and supported. In many ways, she has become for others what Madonna Mission once became for her: a source of stability, a familiar face, and a reminder that they are not alone.
Stories like January’s reflect the deeper mission of Madonna Mission and the community of donors and volunteers who sustain its work. Together, they help uncover gifts, talents, and futures that might otherwise remain unseen, creating not simply pathways to survival but opportunities to belong, grow, and thrive.
English As A Second Language | ESL E n gli s h A s A S ec on d L a n g u age | ESL Our ESL program provides free English classes for refugee women ranging from beginner to advanced levels. Madonna Mission offers a warm and supportive environment where learning feels accessible and encouraging. To remove common barriers, there is both free childcare and transportation, making it easier for women to participate consistently.

ESL IN THE SUMMER! ESL IN THE SUMMER !
This summer, 42 students joined our ESL program across two classes and two language levels, with 1:1 tutoring available for higher-level students. We wrapped up the session with a fun picnic day by Lake Michigan with snacks, games and good conversation to celebrate the close of the summer ESL session!

Providing Over 7,700 Hours
The impact of Madonna Mission reaches well beyond its big blue doors on West Morse Avenue in Chicago. On a hot July day last year, it passed from one mother to another in a neighborhood park. Two small boys, classmates, spotted each other and were off to play. Their mother’s, Ciin and Esther, from different corners of the world, watched the happy collision of little-boy energy, and though neither was fluent in English, they soon found common ground. Small Moments, Lasting Impact S m all M om e nts , L a st i n g I mp ac t Ciin’s Story Ciin Sen left Myanmar in Southeast Asia as a young adult, seeking work and escape from her country’s ongoing armed conflict. She met her husband, Thang, in Malaysia. In 2012, he received political asylum in the U.S. Ciin was able to join him in Chicago three years later. Now the mother of three and a U.S. citizen, she’s a regular at the park.
Esther Nejesa came to Chicago from Uganda in 2024 to reunite with her husband, Albert. She was six months pregnant at the time and travelled with her three young children. With little schooling and accustomed to Luganda, an indigenous language, Esther was eager to improve her English. With a family of six including a new baby, there was no money for classes or daycare. “If you don’t have family or friends here, you don’t have people who can show you what to do,” she explains. “Everything for me was being at the house, taking the kids to school, then coming back to the house.”
While at the park with her children, Esther had a chance encounter with Ciin. Ciin was excited to share about the classes that she was a part of at Madonna Mission. Through the ESL classes, her language skills and confidence had blossomed. Her children were also thriving in the After School Program (ASP) as well as the summer Learning in Action (LIA) Program. Friendly, curious and mindful of her own time as a newcomer, Ciin peppered Esther with questions: Was there anyone to help with the baby? Did she want to improve her English?
After learning Esther’s full story, Ciin immediately recommended Madonna Mission. “They will take care of the baby, and you can study there.” Esther jotted down the address and the next day, arrived at Madonna Mission to register herself for ESL classes. Soon, her children followed, enrolling in both the ASP and LIA programs.
“I’m so happy,” Esther says of how connecting with Madonna Mission through Ciin has opened up her life. “I was feeling this is not what I came to America to do. And then I met this lady.” The encounter in the park is more than just a conversation. It shines a light on how Madonna Mission’s work moves outward. It begins with the volunteers and workers who give their time and talents to help. The ongoing generosity of donors keeps the wheels turning. Those who receive help turn around and pass it on, sharing news of a place to go, a way in, a next step. Those ripples reach out into the community in ever-widening circles. And sometimes, they pause at a park bench where two mothers talk.

The HSPP at Madonna Mission prepares our 7th and 8th grade students for high school, offering entrance test preparation, writing workshops, school visits and research, interview prep, scholarship and financial application assistance. We help our students and families navigate the complex Chicago high school landscape to attend the school of their choice.

Our summer Learning in Action (LIA) program provides a welcoming space where refugee children (Grades 1st-8th) can learn, grow, and enjoy a memorable summer. Students build skills, confidence, and communication through engaging academics and language support.

MANY JOURNEYS One Mission
We celebrated 13 years of empowering refugee families at our spring event held at the Glen View Club, on May 8th 2025. The evening honored volunteers and supporters who sustain the organization’s work and transform lives. The event raised over $200,000 to support literacy programs for Madonna Mission’s 360 students.
Rosemary and John Croghan of Winnetka were recognized with the MM Globe Award for their outstanding advocacy on behalf of Chicago’s refugees.
