W HAT’S MY b ir t h d a y and the year I was born doing here, Mark?” I’d made this startling dis covery as I read the bibliography in his rather extensive report on Mex ico. Listed among the reference and research volumes I saw: “My Mother helped me. She was born . . .” (cen sored as far as this column is con cerned) . I didn’t know whether to laugh or scream. The thought of my age being laid bare to the eyes of my son’s teacher temporarily threw me off balance before Mark answered. “Well, in a bibliography you list all the works from which you get your material for the article, and the date it was written if you can find it. Since you helped me I thought your birthday would sort of be like a copyright date.” In spite of myself I giggled and then laughed heartily. With young sters wonders and surprises never cease. This is the first time in the process of rearing 9 children that I’ve been sited as a copyright date. Somehow I didn’t have the heart to tell Mark I’d rather he deleted this personal part of my history. He had done it innocently since he and the family know my age (I’m second to Mrs. Methuselah). He anticipated no objection to telling the teacher this interesting tidbit. “ Anyway,” I reminded myself, “ you’re the woman who insists it is ridiculous to speak of mature women as girls. More than once you’ve said you don’t mind if people know your age. So how about being consistent with your oft-repeated statements?” Now my thoughts were focused on the subject of maturity. Immaturity runs from reality, living in the nev er-never land of wishful thinking. In the light of eternity such thinking is tragic. Wishing cannot eradicate sin or cleanse the sinner. Subterfuge or cover-up will never develop integ rity or character worthy of heaven. “ . . . speaking the truth in love . . . grow up into Him in all things, which is the head, even Christ” (Ephesians 4:15).
