Helps for the Children Two Men Who Trusted God Numbers 13, 14 Memory Verse: “The Lord is with us . . . fear . . . not” (Num. 14:9). As the children of Israel journeyed toward their Promised Land, God spoke to Moses, their leader, and told him to send men into the new country to see what sort of a land it was to be. One man was chosen from each tribe for the trip. The twelve men were told by Moses to see what type of people lived in Canaan, what sort of cities were there, and whether the land was good or bad. They were to bring back samples of the fruit of the land also. After forty days the spies returned. They told that the land and its fruit were good, but the people were giants and there was no way that the Israelites could take the land. Two of the spies, Caleb and Josh ua, knew that with their God nothing was too hard. They urged Moses to take their people into the land at once. Rather than trusting God who had brought them through so many hard places already on their journey, the people cried all night and complained that Moses had brought them out of the land of Egypt. They decided to choose a captain to lead them back to Egypt! When Caleb and Joshua tried to cause them to trust in God rather than being afraid of the giants, the people threatened to kill them with stones. God was displeased with His children and would have destroyed them had it not been for Moses’ prayer that God would spare them. God heard and answered Moses’ prayer but said that none of the people who were adults and knew His wonderful power would be allowed to enter the Promised Land. For forty years the sinful people had to wander in the wilderness because of their lack of faith in their God. Only Caleb and Joshua could enter the new land because they had not doubted that their God was greater than the giants. The other spies were killed by plagues sent from the Lord. Sometimes today God asks His chil dren to do some very hard thing or to go, to some very difficult place. If they look at the land and the people perhaps their hearts will be frightened and they will refuse to go. If they keep their eyes upon the Lord Jesus and know that they need not fear because their Lord is with them, they will have victory and con stant peace of mind.
