brother”—One who is “chiefest among ten thousand” and “altogether lovely.” Whatever may betide us, His friendship will never fail u s; and He is both able and willing to keep that which we have com mitted to His trust against that day. . . . On the great day of account, He will re ceive and welcome us, as His friends, into the mansions o f eternal rest. — G eorge H ope M onilaw S. DECEMBER 11 The Little Things "Bread shall be given him; his waters shall be sure” (Isa. 33:16). Nothing is too small for God; for cer tainly nothing is too small to cause us sorrow, or to involve us in p eril. . . . Some of us pray about everything, and tremble lest the infinitesimal things should not be sanctified by the Word of God and prayer. It is not the including of trifles which is any trouble to our consciences, but the omission of them. W e are assured that when our Lord gave the angels charge to guard our feet from stones in the way, He placed all the details of our life under heavenly care, and we are glad to commit all things to His keeping. — C harles H addon S purgeon . DECEMBER 12 Free Among the Captives “ Now it came to pass . . . as I was among the captives . . . that the heavens were opened, and I saw visions o f God” (Ezek. 1 :1). Are you “among the captives” ? In your work, your school, your social life, are you among those who are bound? It is then that you may see visions o f God—if you will. Unto Him we turn, for He is our God. And He is our Father, our Father because we are in Jesus Christ, His only begotten Son. W e are free though in cap tivity, because he whom the Son makes free is free indeed. “ Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free”—and to you will be vouchsafed that vision o f God which fulfills His word, “Ye are my witnesses.”—S. I. L. DECEMBER 13 Access to the Throne Afforded “Having then a great high priest, who hath passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God . . . Let us therefore draw near with boldness unto the throne o f grace” (Heb. 4:14, 16, R. V .). “Let us draw near.” Christianity is the religion of access. Those o f you who re call the Greek will remember this word,' which means, “let us come right up to.” We are to come right up to the presence of God. W e shall find this word in the Greek seven times in the Epistle. It always means let us come as near as possible; “let us . . . draw near with boldness unto the throne of grace.” . . . . There are two things for which we are to draw near—to receive mercy because o f our sin, and to find grace because o f our weakness. We shall always need these two things to the end of our days; we shall never get beyond the need of mercy, and beyond the need of grace.—W. H. G riffith T homas . DECEMBER 14 Prayer for the Ministers of the Word "Praying . . . and for me, that utterance may be given unto me” (Eph. 6:18, 19). The apostle, having laid out this duty of .prayer in its full compass, taking all the

saints within its circumference, comes now to apply this general rule, and claims a share in it himself—“ and for me.” . . . . From this request of the apostle, we may note that the ministers of the gospel are in a special manner to be remembered in prayer..........The men who are to bear this heavy burden are those who have no stronger shoulders than others, for they are men subject to infirmities like their brethren. Now, will not your compassion send you to prayer for them ? —W illiam G urnall . DECEMBER IS The Sacrifice of a Contrite Heart “ The sacrifices o f God are a broken spirit” (Psa. 51:17). In this psalm, David has been convinced of his great sin. Already Nathan had told him the Lord had put away his sin, and that he should not die. Comfort and par don were beginning to steal over the con- scienceLstricken man. What shall he ren der to God ? He knows quite w ell: “Thou desirest not sacrifice; else would I give it : thou delightest not in burnt offering. The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit: a broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise.” Brethren, this was His due; and tell me not that this is not sacri fice...........While you cannot offer sacrifice in propitiation for your sin, you can come and offer your broken and contrite heart, and take a sinner’s place at the feet o f the pardoning Saviour, pouring out o f a broken heart rivers in penitence. —E. A. S tuart . DECEMBER 16 Not I "I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith o f the Son of God, who
