family name by having debts at this time of year! New contracts must also be made for standing arrangements. I made a mental note to speak to the man who delivers our eggs each week: “ This year, too, I would appreciate your faithful services.” The first year I didn’t know that I had to renew the arrangement, and wondered why he who had been so faithful, sud denly stopped bringing my eggs! And I must get my New Year’s greeting cards, not f o rge t t ing even one friend. The post cards can be purchased either with a formal greeting already on them, or blank for your own message. The blank ones are sold at the post office. It costs only four yen to mail a post card, but you pay five yen for these special cards; the extra yen is for a huge na tional lottery, and since everyone knows somebody who wins at least some stamps, it is immense ly popular. No job is left unfinished if it can possibly be avoided. A paint er or carpenter simply will not start a job late in the year if he suspects it may not be finished and paid for by New Year’s. Unfinished jobs. Unpaid bills. Social obligations met. How care ful they are to see that these things are all taken care of be fore January 1! “Watch therefore, for ye know not what hour your Lord doth come” (Matt. 24:42). Some day God’s New Day will begin. I have been planning for it and looking forward to it, but it won’t be a specific date like January 1. I wonder if I will leave bills outstanding, — financial, spirit ual, moral. Will I leave some of fended brother offended still? Some weary heart uncheered? Some angry word unapologized for? Some distressed soul still un aware that Christ died for him? Many Japanese have committed suicide when they could not meet their obligations at Oshogatsu. Should I be less concerned about my obligations to those my Lord loves ? DIE
