For more than 55 years, Casti Camp at Castilleja School in Palo Alto has provided girls an all-day camp where fun, learning, and friendships have been the focus. Casti Camp, for girls enter- ing grades 2-6, offers four two-week sessions during the summer. Casti Camp offers a range of age-appropriate activities including athletics, art, science, computers, writing, crafts, cooking, drama, dance and music classes each day. In addition, there are weekly field trips and memorable traditions, including talent shows, counselor skits, prison ball, BBQ Wednesdays, and more. Activities are designed to encourage creativity, self-confidence, cooperation, risk-taking, and responsibility. Casti Camp is based in play and does not have a strong aca- demic focus. We recognize the value of providing balance to the rigors and structure of the academic year. In the fast-paced envi- ronment of the Silicon Valley, creating time for play is more important than ever. This is not to say that Casti campers do not learn while at camp. They do! There are subtle lessons and “ah- ha” moments that occur when you provide an all-girls environ- ment that is neither competitive nor based on prescribed out- comes. Casti Camp's home is the beautiful setting of Castilleja School in Palo Alto. The campers move from activity to activity all over campus. A typical day for a camper may involve working on a sci- ence experiment in the science lab, water color painting in the art studio, making popsicles in the cooking room, eating lunch in the dining room, followed by reading under the shade of a tree, learn- ing improv in the theater, and playing sharks and minnows in the swimming pool. The choices are varied and vast. There are activ- ities and the space to do just about anything the counselors can dream up for the campers! Jenny R., whose daughter attended Casti Camp, writes: "The all-girls setting provides a particularly supportive camaraderie that my daughter really hasn't had anywhere else and loves. Coral's favorite memories are of the game, Clock Tower, which she feels is like a real life spy game played in the dark. It gets her heart racing with excitement. Coral enjoys all the Casti songs and frequently sings them in the car when we are on a long family driving trip. She mentions fabulously funny coun- selors like CJ and counselors from whom she has learned valuable life skills like Andy in junior lifeguards. The culmination of every summer is in the show at the end of the year. She loves perform- ing and seeing what the other groups have done too. Thanks for so many great times Casti Camp!" The structure of camp is quite unique. The campers choose Castilleja Camp A fun and safe place for young girls to play and learn about themselves in an all-girl environment

their classes, taking five classes each day for the two-week ses- sion. On the third day of camp, the campers may change their class selection if they choose. It is quite a powerful experience for our young girls to make a choice and ask for it. In today's highly scheduled world of playdates, lessons, and tutors, rarely do they have the opportunity to make choices at this level, let alone have the space in their schedules to ask themselves what would they most like to be doing. Maya R., 4th grader, writes: "Casti Camp is the best summer camp is because you choose your own fun class selections. There are 5 periods plus snack, lunch, all camp-time, and free-time. So if you like science, you can take Wacky Wonders. If you like making friendship bracelets, you can take bracelet making class. If you like cooking, you can take a cooking class (cupcake or breakfast-making class). Finally, if you like sports, you can take a prison-ball or hockey class. It is SUPER fun. It is good that it starts at 8:30 and ends at 4:00. The counselors tell stories, sing songs, and make up skits. At the end of the two- week session, there is a stage performance where everyone pre- sents what they made, or tells what they did." At Casti Camp, the counselors design the classes that they teach. Counselors are invested and comfortable in what they are teaching, and their enthusiasm, creativity, and confidence shines through to ignite the same in their campers. Because counselors design the courses, the classes change from year to year. Some highlights from 2016 were Geodesic Fort Making, Puzzle Solvers, Peace, Love, Yoga!, Ancient Cultures, Grrrl Power, Dodge Ball, Safari Dancers, to name a few. Casti counselors are generally in college or pursuing their Masters degrees. Many work at Camp for multiple years, and some are former campers who have been waiting for their chance to be a Casti Camp counselor. The counselors look forward to engaging with the campers and being role models. They love the chance to act silly and sing traditional camp songs with a whole bunch of enthusiastic campers! The songs can probably be heard around the neighborhood each morning and afternoon. In addi- tion, our Campers in Leadership Training (CILT) program offers wonderful leadership opportunities for girls entering grades 7-9. Campers have numerous opportunities each day to interact with campers of all ages. Most classes have campers from second to sixth grades, playing and learning from each other. Some class- es are designed for a tighter age range due to the activity. Throughout the day the campers are independent, following their unique schedule. Campers come together with their own age group first thing in the morning, for lunch, and again at the end of the day. Their days are a mix of independence as well of the comfort of a small consistent group with whom to eat their lunch, as well as to start and end their day. Each Friday, Casti campers board charter buses and take Camp out on the road! We spend the day at the beach, water parks, and museums. This is a day when the campers really bond with each other and the counselors. It is a time to hang out with new camp friends, learn how to make friendship bracelets, or get up the courage to go down that waterslide. Casti Camp prides itself on providing a fun and safe place for young girls to play and learn about themselves in an all-girls envi- ronment. It is a place to unplug from schedules and electronics and connect face to face. It is about developing independence. It is about trying new things to build confidence. With the Right Foundation, Everything is Possible! West Valley College for Kids is slowly weaving its way into the hearts of Indian parents

to having lifeguards who act as class aides in addition to the instructor. Our College Prep Camp for High School stu- dents will have a maximum of 30 students with two teach- ers. Most of our teachers are middle school teachers while others might be professionals. We like to hire the people we think will bring the best experience to the students in the form of interesting curriculum, activities, expertise and enthusiasm to actively engage students in learning. For example, we are offering “Living History” classes this year in which students will learn about ancient civilizations or American history. Each of these themed classes will have activities, such as simulating the making of a mummy, to immerse the students in the topic. The Drama and art class- es will present works to the students on the last day of the camp. The 1-week STEM camp will be focused on learning about the Vasona Creek restoration project on campus and will spend time outdoors with the creek but will also spend time engineering water filters among other activities. Everything is designed to keep the students engaged with their topic so they learn more and have fun while they do so! Our schedule Middle Schoolers have a schedule of three classes beginning at 8:30. Each class is ninety minutes and there are ten minutes between classes for students to pass between their classrooms. Lunch is between second and third period. The end of the day is at 1:45. Parents also have the option of selecting a fourth period or “after school” program from 2 to 4 pm. High school students attend class from 8:30 to 1:45 with a lunch break. Due to the small size of the camp the high school students do not pass between classrooms. We believe in Diversity Our students are as diverse as our community! We are very proud that the ethnic mix of our student reflects the community we serve. Not only do we see our students learning new topics, but they grow in confidence and poise as they make the most out of their camp experience! What we believe in: The basic philosophy of our camps is that every child deserves a high quality, fun and enriching summer experi- ence. At College for Kids we believe that academic enrich- ment doesn’t have to be boring or painful for kids. Our teachers make classes fun and interesting by presenting lessons and activities in an engaging manner. Breadth of knowledge and experience is also at the heart of College for Kids. Parents and children have over 20 classes to choose from each session including creative writing, math, science, art, sports, swimming and much more. Every year new topics are added to keep offerings fresh and exciting as chil- dren often attend each summer through their middle school years. A plan for College: Our College Preparation Camp helps students going into 10-12 grades develop a plan for college. Each student receives guidance on selecting a career/schools, and how the right extracurricular activities, volunteering opportuni- ties or internships can boost their chances of success. The camp covers college and financial aid applications, person- al statements, resume building, some test preparation and other resources available to high school students. We are different: College for Kids is a unique program in many ways. Students sign up for a schedule of three to four classes that they attend daily for the duration of the camp which takes place on the West Valley College campus. Although they are well supervised and classes are taught at the middle school level, they are able to have an simulated college experience as they pass from class to class, eat lunch in the campus center and use the College’s classrooms, labs and sports facilities. Many students develop more confidence and start thinking about their future college choices as it being on a college campus is now a part of their reality! High school students receive instruction that will pre- pare them to apply for and enter college with skills that will help them succeed in college and life. You can fit us in your budget: Affordability is also something that sets College for Kids apart from other camps. Students can attend a 3-week (14 day) camp from 8:30 am to 1:45 pm for as little as $645. In addition, this year we are offering a special 1-week STEM camp for $99! Good Teacher/student ratio Most of our classes middle school classes have a maxi- mum of 24 students with one teacher while some may have an aide due to the types of activities the students will engage in. Why Summer Camps are important for your Child

ence might change your child’s entire outlook. • What do you and your child want to gain from the camp experience ? Learn new skills, develop more self confidence, improving proficiency in certain areas, become more independent? • What are other expectations of the camp experi- ence? • What are the special interests that your child wants to explore? • Are there any physical, intellectual, or social limita- tions that should be considered? • What kind of emphasis will your child profit from the most? For example: Is a lot of structure desirable, is social interaction with members of the opposite sex important, or does your child need a place where he or she is encouraged to develop at their own pace? • You should take some time to consider what you can reasonably afford. • Ask for references of families who have had their child attend the camp. Speaking with these families can give you valuable insight about the camp and the families that send their children there. Finally and more importantly, involve your child in the selection process. Review your child's prefer- ences and let you child ask questions too. We, here at the IPM office, sincerely hope that you find this Summer Camp Special issue helpful. It’s a very common notion among Indians here that summer camp is only for those kids whose both parents work! I thought so too, almost 10 years ago. I heard many moms say, “I dont work. So my kids need not join any summer camp. They can just relax at home. They had a tough school year.” This notion has been proved wrong by many studies and expert verifications. Various studies seem to prove that kids at home during summer are more likely to play video games, watch TV or just lag before a laptop. With these gismos acting as their baby sitter (how long can a mother or father entertain them?) kids lose study skills and physical stimula- tion. As neighborhood play is limited to arranged hourly structured sections, they are most likely to stagnate more and play less. Please see page 32 for an expert article on this topic for more information. Summer camps need not be all study and no play. Fantastic camps which in addition to stimulating a child’s thought process are equally entertaining and fun. Destination Science, Bizsmart, Edventure More, Sara’s Science, Tech Academy, CDM, BADM are only a few very good examples. There are many more. Check this issue carefully foryour interests. These are not just ads but RESOURCES for your child. They are interested in you because they know what most of the Indian Parents want and expect from a camp. We here at the India Parent Magazine carefully selected camps that might be very interesting to all of us. Just us. Because we are very choosy. Competitive Program is an introductory program designed to improve stroke and turn tech- nique in preparation for the DACA Competitive Team. Small class sizes of no more than seven swimmers of similar ability allow for first-

class instruction that is both focused and personalized. Instruction in the DACA Pre-Competitive Program provides a technical skill base, ignit- ing a love of the water and inspiring swimmers to continue on in all lev- els of the DACA Competitive Team. give back to the community. It gives her an idea of what’s out there while under supervision. And, she’s seeing what the community is like on her own terms without the input of her parents. In addition, she’s getting community service credit.” SOS is an ongoing part of many young lives. Service in the community has a deep impact on participants, who express the desire to continue working to benefit their com- munity. Many SOS graduates have developed an enduring bond with the Museum, and continue as volunteers, SOS staff, and Museum staff. Participants also have the opportunity to build friend- ships and have fun as they start each morning with active group games, and travel to a different Bay Area field-trip destination each session, as a reward for all their hard work.

Each year families are challenged to find activities to engage youth in for the summer. Responding to the needs of young teens, Summer of Service (SOS) at Children’s Discovery Museum of San Jose is a unique and innovative summer program where youth entering 7th through 10th grade in the fall of 2016 can have fun, make friends, meet new challenges, and make a difference in the community. Studies show that students who participate in service- learning programs do better in school, are more likely to graduate high school and go to college, and are more like- ly to become active, engaged citizens. Participants of SOS can serve on one of five teams, each with its own unique theme of service. Themes include envi- ronment, early childhood education, museum and media, outreach and leadership. Youth in SOS perform projects while learning about their environment; serve as role mod-

els while assisting at a local preschool; work with families at the Museum while building digital media skills through photography and film production; work in shelters and senior centers, and build leadership skills while planning and facilitating programming for SOS. Youth are given the opportunity to give back to the community while they build leadership and teamwork skills that they will use for the rest of their lives. In addition, youth learn to value their community and to see themselves as a vital asset to it. A parent recently wrote about her experience with Children's Discovery Museum of San Jose and the SOS pro- gram: “SOS is a wonderful idea. This is my daughter’s second year. The benefits of my daughter’s involvement in SOS is being with kids her age, working together to improve and

They provide Team Sports classes, leagues, and camps year round in Menlo Park, Palo Alto, Redwood City, and Atherton, CA. Fun and fundamentals are a 25+ year tradition with Hi-Five sports. Here IPM spoke to coach Joe Ram to know more about Hi-Five camps! - Hi-Five is the best multi-sport summer camp around. We have semi pro and col- lege athletes that teach the children the skills that are needed to play the game. Everything we do at Hi-Five comes back to our core which is teamwork and having fun. -Hi-Five has qualified PE teachers as well as people who have played sports in col- lege as high as the Division 1 level. We love children and it shows through our work. We train children to not only enjoy sports but to play them properly and enjoy every minute of it. Our staff is always hav- ing fun and getting the smiles out. IPM: Can you please tell us your philosophy and the basic premise of the school? IPM: How do you think it's different from other such Sports Camps/schools? IPM: Can you explain a little bit about method of teaching? - We base everything we do on sportsman- ship and having fun. creations. The mixed media class allows stu- dents to use more unique mediums such as wire, foam and paper mache to create interesting and exciting craft projects. We also have an advanced placement class where students can work on their portfolios or simply take their art skills to the next level. The teacher of the advanced class, Bre Enright is a talented artist who attended Pratt Institute in New York and knows firsthand what it takes to make your portfolio college admis- sions ready. She has helped many students cre- ate portfolios for prestigious art schools such as the Rohde Island School of Design and Art Center. This is a great class for any experienced artist who wants help fine tuning their skills from a gifted professional. Each class at Young At Art is from one to two hours in length and meets once a week. Every class has students that vary in skill level from beginner to advance. Class prices include instruction and the best quality materials. All the materials that the student will need are provided, so you will never be charged a hidden fee or be frantically running through the art store before class. Tuition is paid by the month and is adjust- ed depending on the number of classes in that particular month. Some of our students have been coming here for over five years and have produced incredible pieces of art. We have had students compete in multiple art shows around the bay area. Our stu- dent teacher ratio is six to one allowing each stu- dent an abundance of help geared toward their skill level. Every one of our instructors is an accomplished artist and very well educated, most having either a BA or BFA in fine arts. They are extremely talented and look forward to shar- ing their talents. Some of our teachers were even students at Young At Art themselves so they

Young At Art was started in a garage over three decades ago and has become an accom- plished, year round art school with enrollments of over 400 students per month. Young At Art encourages students to artistically express them- selves while learning in a nurturing environ- ment. We offer art classes for ages 4 years to adult specializing in oil painting, drawing, clay, and exploration with mixed media. Oil painting is our most popular class where students enjoy ref- erencing images or using their imaginations to create impressive and memorable works of art. In our drawing classes students learn important drawing techniques that are the basis for many different art forms. They learn to use pencil, pas- tel, colored pencils and other 2D mediums while drawing still lifes or creating imaginary worlds. Our clay class is new to Young At Art this month and we think that students will really enjoy this introductory class. Students will learn all about the basics of working with clay and will be instructed in making all different kinds of clay

Young At Art provides an encouraging and nurturing environment while teaching students the basics of art as well as so much more. Art is such a great creative outlet for children and adults alike and Young At Art is a perfect place to turn artistic dreams into reality.

know exactly what the students are going through and how to help them achieve their goals. We have a small staff here at Young At Art which gives students the chance to really get to know their teachers. One of the things that makes Young At Art a unique and nurturing learning environment is the way our classes are taught. In a lot of tradition- al classroom settings, the teacher has a set lesson plan and everyone is taught the same. Unfortunately, sometimes in this environment the students who are having trouble struggle to keep up with the more advance students. At Young At Art students are not pushed into a situ- ation where they won’t be able to excel. The teacher goes around the room and helps each student individually at his or her own skill level. This way every student can progress com- fortable at their own pace. Along with our regular classes we also offer week long day camps June through August where students can learn ceramics, painting, sculpture and much more. We also have winter workshops going on December 20th-23rd, 2010. In the morning winter workshop, students will create many unique crafts that can be turned into ornaments or given as gifts. In the afternoon workshop, painting, drawing and other 2D art mediums will be used to create festive pieces of art.

Emerson School and Hacienda School Teaching kids to hate writing

spelling instead of thought and organization; prohib- it students from using effective writers’ tools such as dictionaries and thesauruses; test students by allow- ing them to write only one draft under severe time pressure; and use teachers who grew up hating writ- ing and are unhappy with the prospect of staying up late to read and grade 30 papers on the same boring topic. If, however, you want your child to write well, you must first ask yourself, what does it mean to be a good writer? Even for an audience of parents dedi- cated to nurturing outstanding students, the goal can have a variety of meanings. For some, it means that their children get good grades on writing assignments at school and attend prestigious colleges. Others, with a more long-term view, see good writing as the manifestation of clear thinking, which will help their students pursue higher education into professions such as medicine, law, engineering, academia, and so forth. Still others, see good writing as a channel for

If you want your child to learn to hate writing and, consequently, to write only when necessary, there are effective resources available to you—tradi- tional writing programs in most public schools. in their work by pointing out what is valuable about it and emphasizing how each draft represents an improvement on the previous one. That teacher guides students to understand that good writing requires the time to re-read, edit, and re-write their work, as contrasted with the “on-demand writing” that is taught in most schools.

self expression, which helps young people relieve the stresses of navigating a complex, difficult world. It would be best if, in addition to the other meanings, being a good writer meant enjoying the art and craft of writing, because that is essential to future success. Rarely, do parents conceive of their students as future authors of important, influential works— which is surprising, because some will be. It is far easier to imagine one’s child as a future football play- er in the National Football League, a star ballerina in the American Ballet Theatre, or a solo pianist at Carnegie Hall, though a child has a much higher probability of being a successful novelist, how-to author, journalist, or consultant as a result of out- standing writing skills. Writing is a skill-based activity that requires both specific skills and the motivation to improve them. In that sense, it is analogous to learning to play soccer, where everyone—from five-year-olds starting to play the game to World Cup-class players—must continue to practice dribbling, passing, and shooting. It is important for beginners to experience the pleasure of playing soccer games so that they enjoy what they are doing and have a desire to improve. Good players never stop wanting to be better. Rather than focus on the errors in student writing, a successful writing teacher helps students take pride
