WOULD YOU RUN A 5K ON THANKSGIVING MORNING? Giving Back With Tony’s Turkey Trot

It’s been an exciting and tough year for many of us. Every time you turn on the TV, it feels like there’s more negative news and sad stories. This year, perhaps more than any other, I’m grateful for Thanksgiving and the holiday season. Now is the time to step away from the negativity, to give thanks for what we have, and give back to those who are struggling. For three years, Wolf Retirement Navigation has been a proud lead sponsor of Tony’s Turkey Trot, a 5K charity event held on Thanksgiving morning every year in Atlantic Beach. This event is dedicated to raising money and awareness for people living with a traumatic brain injury. One accident can completely change a person’s life, and few people are prepared to deal with the emotional and financial burden that comes when a loved one suddenly needs constant medical care after a brain injury. This is a matter that is near and dear to my family’s heart. My wife’s sister Candace suffered from a traumatic brain injury for the last 13 years of her life after she was thrown from a horse and suffered a stoke. Prior to her injury, Candace was a professional horse trainer who showed horses and trained kids to ride and show horses. I never knew Candace before the accident, but I’ve heard many stories about her life from my wife Danielle and their mother. Candace was the kind of person who was always full of laughter and fun; she didn’t take life too seriously. Danielle had a close relationship with her sister, and I know how hard it was for her to see Candace hurting after her accident. Her brain injury left her with no long-term or short-term memories. She needed 24/7 care and had to live in a nursing home until she passed away in 2014. Participating in Tony’s Turkey Trot is our family’s way of honoring Candace and supporting the 210,000-plus Floridians who suffer from traumatic brain injuries every year. I’ll be at the race with Danielle and our daughter Isabella, along with team members, bright and early Thanksgiving morning. Tony’s Turkey Trot is the only race that starts and ends in our home city of Atlantic Beach, and you couldn’t ask for a better view. Last year, more than 1,000 participants got together to walk, run, or “waddle” along the 5K’s scenic course. This year, in addition to prizes,

Getting up to run a 5K at 8

like the ideal start to your Thanksgiving morning, but,

believe me, it’s a blast! My family has a great time getting

up early, heading out to the run, and coming home for a big Thanksgiving

dinner. Plus, we get to work off some of those calories we’re about to eat from all the pie, so that’s a plus. If you’d like to join us or want to know more about Tony’s Turkey Trot, you can register for the race through November 23, 2017 at tonysturkeytrot.com. Also reach out to Robin at the office if you would like to make a donation in lieu of running. This is a really great opportunity to give back and help people in the community, and isn’t that what Thanksgiving is all about? –Adam Wolf, CPA, CFP

The Life-Giving Benefits of Saunas

trouble dealing with the heat of a typical sauna (average sauna temperatures are kept around 212 degrees F), this latest trend is for you. The average temperature of an infrared sauna is 150 degrees F, making it a more tolerable experience. One New York studio touts infrared’s ability to stimulate collagen production, an added anti-aging benefit. Need another bonus? Infrared saunas are said to release up to 20 percent more toxins from the body than traditional saunas. Whichever type of sauna you decide to visit, the potential health benefits speak for themselves. If you don’t get to escape to Miami or Cancun this winter (and even if you do), it’s a relaxing way to warm up and ease winter ailments. Treat your body and yourself to a sauna experience!

relief, and cardiovascular health. Traditional saunas use heat to get your blood flowing and promote circulation, and the sweating that goes on during a sauna experience is said to purge toxins from your body. It’s a rejuvenating ritual that releases stress along with endorphins. Now, the health journal Age and Ageing has found evidence linking sauna use to a lowered risk for Alzheimer’s disease and dementia. Men aged 42–60 who participated in frequent sauna bathing sessions were found to have lowered rates of dementia and Alzheimer’s. If feeling good and warming you up weren’t enough, a healthy mind is a great reason to sauna. And while the simplicity of the traditional sauna is part of what makes it great, some facilities have added a modern twist: infrared rays. Infrared saunas, already hot in New York City and Los Angeles, are starting to pop up everywhere. If you have

Half of All Retirees Can’t Maintain Their Lifestyle

retirement plans. In order to compensate for the hit they took during the Great Recession, many people had to quickly save more money or delay their retirement. As for those who were able to retire as planned, many took on another job in retirement, not because they were interested in the work, but because they needed to supplement their income or risk running out of money. If you’re hoping to retire on time and maintain your standard of living during retirement, financial planners advise you to save as much as possible and live within your means. This is sound advice, but there is one more strategy you need to keep in mind if you hope to achieve a successful retirement: Have a written retirement plan in place to get you to and through retirement successfully, taking risk, growth, fees, taxes, and Social Security into account to reach your unique goals. Retirement is not a sprint; it’s a marathon. You need to plan for every mile. This is where Wolf Retirement Navigation can help. Whether you’re planning by yourself or you already have a financial planner and would like a second opinion, having an expert retirement planner on your team can only help. Learn when to turn on Social Security, how to save on taxes now and in the future, what level of risk you need in your portfolio, and how to pay as little fees as possible. These strategies will help you increase your income and enjoy your dream retirement. WILL YOU BE ONE OF THEM?

Have you saved enough money to maintain your standard of living throughout retirement? According to the Center for Retirement Research at Boston College, many have not. Recent research found 52 percent of American households won’t be able to enjoy their current lifestyle in retirement. Many will run out of money or have to take less and less income during retirement, decreasing their quality of living.

Why have so many folks ended up here? To start, the market crash of 2008 set back a lot of baby boomers in their

But your family Thanksgiving doesn’t have to be crowded and uncomfortable.
